13,000 cochlear implants in the country

Cochlear implant surgery for an 18-month-old girl from Behshahri and a 23-month-old boy from Fereydunkenari was successfully performed in Babol, and Babol became the center of cochlear implantation in the provinces of Mazandaran, Golestan and Semnan.

Dr. Seyed Farzad Jalali, President of Babol University of Medical Sciences, said: "Today, we are very happy that the cochlear implant center was opened in Ayatollah Rouhani Hospital and Babol University of Medical Sciences."

He pointed out that there are a very limited number of university centers that have this possibility, he said: This surgery is one of the most expensive operations and costs about 500 million tomans, but in Iran most of the cost of cochlear implantation by the Ministry of Health with Government currency is paid so that families pay only about 6 million tomans.

The president of Babol University of Medical Sciences acknowledged: "Due to the relatively high prevalence of deafness in children born, one in every 1,000 people may be born deaf. These patients should be identified and treated immediately in the first 3 years of life. The later diagnosis Given the power and success of the operation is reduced.

The official added: "By launching this center in Babol as a hub in the provinces of Mazandaran, Golestan and Semnan, we will cover about 7 million people."

Dr. Jalali stated: In the country, about 2,000 deaf people are born annually, of which about 200-150 are related to this region.

He added: "It is predicted that we will have about 100 to 150 patients every year who can use this service and refrain from visiting Tehran."

The head of the Scientific Committee for Cochlear Implantation, referring to the history of cochlear implantation in Iran, said: "The history of this cochlear implantation in the world is relatively new and Iran was able to achieve good growth and prosperity in this field."

Dr. Hashemi said: "Hearing is very important as a superior sense and the importance of this issue was due to the development of cochlear implant centers in the country and today we will see the 15th hearing center in the country in Babylon."

The specialist continued: "Hearing problems are one of the most common disabilities and one in a thousand people needs cochlear implants."

He called for the development of hearing screening centers in the country for early detection of ear diseases and said: "Golden time is very important for success in this operation and it is better for children under the age of three to have surgery."

According to Dr. Hashemi, a cochlear implant is an electronic device that is surgically inserted into the inner ear and provides the feeling of hearing sound in deaf or hard of hearing people.

Hashemi added: "Cochlear implants are more suitable for children born congenitally with absolute deafness, or adults who lose their hearing due to an accident or disease, as well as the less this surgery is performed at a younger age." , Has better results.

Iran started as the first cochlear implant center in the Middle East and has performed 13,000 cochlear implants in the country so far.

Dr. Masoud Motassadi Zarandi, head of the ENT department of Amir Alam Hospital in Tehran, referring to the establishment of the first cochlear implant surgery center in Mazandaran province in Babol, said: "With advances in technology and new surgical methods, deafness can be eradicated." . In other words, today, with the help of knowledge and technology, all types of hearing loss can be treated.

Professor of Tehran University of Medical Sciences continued: "For many years in Iran, as the first country in the Middle East, cochlear implant surgeries have helped a large number of congenital deaf people to the point that today we are witnessing positive and acceptable results of these operations."

"We are happy to launch the 15th cochlear implant surgery center in Babylon today," he said, noting that the Middle East's first cochlear implant center opened in the country nearly 24 years ago.

Dr. Motassadi stated: To date, about 13,000 cochlear implants have been performed throughout the country during these years.

He stated that genetic causes caused by consanguineous marriages in the country are among the reasons for the hearing loss of infants. Infectious ear diseases are also known as other major causes of deafness in the country, which can be treated with this operation and a healthy person can enter the society.

He continued: "This act was one of the most costly acts."
